The Volkswagen Golf R Mk7 is one of those cars that manages to combine genuine performance with everyday usability, and this 2014 example takes that formula several steps further. With Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 engine, 4MOTION all-wheel drive and lightning-fast DSG transmission, it already has the foundations of an exceptional performance hatch. This particular Golf R has been extensively upgraded with a carefully selected combination of engine, drivetrain, suspension and exterior modifications.

At the heart of the build is an EQT Stage 2 engine tune, supported by a Cobb Accessport, custom intake pipe with K&N panel filter, custom catless downpipe and an ECS front-mount intercooler. The result is a significantly more aggressive version of the already capable EA888 platform, with stronger turbocharged performance and a sharper response throughout the rev range.

The DSG has also received an EQT Stage 2 gearbox tune, making this more than simply an engine-tuned Golf R. The calibration is designed to complement the additional power, with the DSG delivering fast, decisive shifts and keeping the engine in its sweet spot when you’re pushing on.

The exhaust setup retains the factory rear muffler, paired with 3-inch X Force tips, giving the car a purposeful appearance while maintaining a more refined character than an entirely open aftermarket system. A GFB DV+ adjustable blow-off valve adds to the turbo character, while the ECS dogbone mount insert helps tighten drivetrain response.

Underneath, the Golf R has been lowered approximately 30mm on H&R springs, giving it a more purposeful stance while complementing the wider 19-inch wheels. The car sits on SSR GTX01 19×8.5 +45 wheels in matte black, wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE003 tyres for a combination of grip and aggressive fitment.

Visually, the car has been given a subtle but unmistakable transformation. A Flow Designs front splitter with side spats, Flow Designs side skirts with matching spats and a Maxton rear diffuser with side spats give the Mk7 a much more aggressive road presence without taking away from its factory lines.

The front end has also been cleaned up with the original number plate bracket removed and shaved, creating a much cleaner appearance.

This is a Golf R for the enthusiast who wants more than a standard example. The combination of EQT Stage 2 engine and DSG tuning, upgraded intercooling, intake and exhaust components, H&R suspension and SSR wheels creates a seriously capable street car while retaining the practicality that makes the Golf R such an appealing package.
