Real Story: What We Did When a Car Failed Pre-Bid Inspection

Importing a Car From Japan?

Here is Why Pre-Bid Inspections Are Non-Negotiable

When it comes to rare JDM imports, few cars stir the heart like the Honda Integra Type R, especially in the four door DB8 model — who would not love a Type R from the 90’s where you can put your family in the back? A B18C-powered performance legend with a limited-slip differential. But even unicorns can hide costly problems.

This is the true story of how our inspection stopped a client from buying a money pit — and helped him secure an even better DB8.

The Car: Honda Integra Type R (DB8)

Our client, Adam from Sydney, had his dream spec in mind for a 1998 DB8 Integra Type R:

  • Championship White
  • Matching VIN and B18C engine stamp
  • Factory Recaro seats & Momo wheel
  • Original wheels & wing
  • No crash history or mods
  • Grade 4, under 140,000 km

We found a candidate through USS Tokyo Auctions — Grade 4, clean photos, auction sheet looked solid. On paper, it was the one.

The Pre-Bid Inspection Changed Everything

Every car we source gets a full ground inspection in Japan before a bid is placed. Auction photos and grades do not tell the whole story — especially for performance cars over 25 years old.

Our Inspection Checklist

  • B18C engine: Cold start check and any engine noise or smoke
  • Gearbox Operation
  • Check for rust, panel alignment and paint thickness
  • Visual inspection of suspension and steering components
  • VIN & engine number match
  • Review of tyre tread and brake pad wear
  • Inspection for signs of accident damage or panel repairs
  • Assessment of fluid condition and if there is any leaks (engine oil, coolant, transmission)
  • Verification of auction sheet accuracy and grading
  • Inspection on interior condition, odour and wear
  • Underbody photos

What We Found

  • Rust on rear boot inside boot plastic lining  — common on coastal DB8s
  • Repainted bonnet & bumper — signs of a front-end repair
  • Mismatched VIN stamp on engine block — possible replacement
  • None of this was mentioned on the auction sheet.

Client Reaction

“I was so close to pulling the trigger. It looked mint online, but after the rust on the rear boot, I backed out straight away. It would’ve been a disaster long-term.”

— Adam, Sydney

What Happened Next: A Better Honda Integra Type R (DB8)

Two weeks later, another DB8 Type R appeared. Same spec. Lower km. Full dealer service history to 2021. This time, our inspection came back clean.

  • Healthy engine zero leaks
  • Gearbox tight, working perfectly
  • Zero rust and clean under body
  • Good Suspension and steering companents
  • Matching VIN and engine number
  • Original paint confirmed and clean body no accident repairs
  • Factory Recaros in excellent condition
  • 80% tyre tread left and 70% brake pads left
  • Correct verification of auction sheet accuracy and grading
  • Excellent interior condition, no odour or smoking in the car

We secured it under budget, and its now headed to Sydney.

Client Reaction

“This one’s an absolute gem! Everything feels tight, and the engine pulls like it should. Couldn’t be happier.”

— Adam, Sydney

Key Lessons for JDM Buyers

1. Rust hides in common spots – Rear arches, radiator supports, boot seams — especially on coastal or snow-region cars.

2. Repainted body panels – Signs of a major accident and repairs not completed correctly.

3. VIN mismatch hurts value – Matching engine and chassis numbers are vital for collectible models.

Our Rule: No Inspection, No Purchase

At The Import Yard, photos are just the starting point — never the final word. Every car is physically inspected in Japan before we place a bid, because “mint in pics” can hide costly surprises in reality. Our boots-on-the-ground approach ensures you know exactly what you are getting — and what you are avoiding.
